KRA – Kravín Rural Arts
Hranice 6,
Maleč-Chotěboř, 58301

THE LOCATION:

  • KRA – Kravín Rural Arts is situated in the Vysočina region of the Czech Republic – a hilly area of Železné hory (Iron mountains) – in a small hamlet Hranice u Malče.
  • As an art/culture organization KRA is driven by ecology as a creative potential. Each year we organize (international) art residencies, a festival with workshops and performances, several online and onsite participations. During the corona years we set up together with local partners around Chotěboř a new place: ButtuLab, a DIY creative coworking and design lab, promoting clean technologies and eco-skills. Each Summer we organize a small DIY festival, with field recording walks, exchanges of skills and ideas, workshops and open meetings, concerts and performances. Artists of any (or no) discipline are welcome throughout the year, to stay and research and/or create new work in our residency places, ateliers and garden, and in the surroundings.
  • Within our short history we moved from a curatorial practice inviting artists, to a local and collaborative setup. Over the years and around us, we saw the emergence of a small biofarm, an alternative school, after-school and artisanal organizations, a social café, a co-working space with a music venue and discussion/screening space, a a bioshop nearby. This is extended to several regional and international cultural organizations within central Europe and the wider EU. We are contributing to an active exchange of our artists and residents within regional as well as new artistic networks, like CENSE and PAN…
  • KRA is happy to work within this local ánd international context at the same time. We try to take up a role in fostering new dialogues, introducing new eko-creative practices, experimenting with new art forms. We like to see KRA as a place where new artworks are being developed, conform with the rural and natural environment. Currently we are working with a thematic project about water management and bio/eco diversity.
  • Apart from its own thematic lines, KRA is welcoming individual and group initiatives that are in the same boat, and are interested in artistic-ecological research and development, with a strong multidisciplinary nature. Currently we are also setting up an ecological sound art exchange FM/web radio and other projects with our local partners and sister organizations in Kerminy (FR/Bretagne), Berlin (DE), Cagliari (IT/Sardinia), Bratislava (SK), Gdansk (PL), …

STUDIOS / REHEARSAL ROOMS:

  • We work from an old mansion (1715), and provide for the residents a common attic 10x10m for working and living.
  • As a studio we provide a 750 m2 kravín (cowshed) and a 5000m2 wild garden, and the whole natural environment.

SERVICES:

  • We cook and have dinner together, and share the costs with all visitors.
  • In the attic we are having sound equipment, can assist with electronics, and have an extensive library on literary, cultural and ecological issues.
  • We help the development of the art works where we can on the technical and ecological side, and if needed ask for assistence from our local partners.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • We only accept residencies during the Summer months, due to the weather conditions the rest of the year.
  • We promote rural ecological development and expect artists and collectives to work along these lines. It is part of the necessary transition for a cleanier, and better world, promoting diversity and openness.
  • Better contact us for special wishes, we are quite flexible in working this out with the residents.
  • We require the residents to have a public presentation or try-out for the local citizens around. Ideal residencies are around 3 weeks (intake, getting settled in a rural environment, creating).
